Samuel Scheidt's keyboard works, published in his 1624 anthology Tabulatura Nova, blend the Lutheran polyphonic tradition with brilliant Italian musical styles, especially Venetian.

Instruments

The harpsichord used by Yoann Moulin for this recording is a 2011 instrument by Philippe Humeau, inspired by a 1615 instrument by Andreas Ruckers, a renowned instrument maker from Antwerp.

In the early 17th century, the Low Countries, particularly Antwerp, were a major center for European music printing and instrument making, with Ruckers harpsichords exported across Europe.

Composer Biography

Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, an extraordinary musician from Amsterdam, gave hour-long organ concerts twice a day in the Oude Kerk, even though music was not performed during Calvinist church services.

Yoann Moulin, the performer, perceives a 'faith in a language of twelve tones' in these works, seeing them as combinations and computations where emotion is formal and sentiment architectural.
