The E.F. Walcker Organ (Op. 2150) used for this recording was originally built in 1927 for the Hans-Sachs-Haus in Gelsenkirchen, a monumental concert hall.
Performer Biography
Mona Hartmann, the organist on this album, was born in Moscow in 1994 and has won numerous awards at prestigious international organ competitions.
Compositional Technique
Passacaglia and Chaconne are two variation forms that are difficult to distinguish, with genre boundaries often blurring, as seen in Bach's famous Chaconne in D minor for solo violin.
Album & Artwork
The works on this album are connected by their form (Passacaglia or Chaconne) and their relation to the specific type of organ used for the recording.
Historical Context
Both the Passacaglia and Chaconne forms nearly fell into oblivion during the 18th and early 19th centuries, experiencing a renaissance in the 20th century with the rediscovery of baroque forms.
Recording & Production
The Walcker organ was dismantled and stored in 2001 due to renovations of the Hans-Sachs-Haus, and was later restored and translocated to St. Antonius Church in Papenburg, where it was consecrated in 2020.
