The Wihan Quartet is an elite European quartet that won the First Prize, Audience Prize, and Journalists' Prize at the 1991 London International Competition by a unanimous jury vote, chaired by Yehudi Menuhin.

Composition History

The Concert in D major, Op. 21, was sketched in May 1889, but its slow movement was completed first, followed by the Sicilienne in 1890, and the first movement and finale in the summer of 1891.

The Concert in D major is a concerted chamber work, not a concerto, scored flexibly as a violin sonata, piano solo, string quartet or quintet, piano quintet, or piano sextet (when tutti).

Notable Performances

The premiere of Chausson's Concert in D major in Brussels on February 26, 1892, was a decisive triumph for the composer, performed by renowned Belgian violinist Eugène Ysaÿe and others.
