Rachmaninov's first major success, the Prelude in C# minor Op. 3 No. 2, became one of his most known works, but an international copyright error meant he received no financial benefit from its many arrangements.
Historical Context
The tradition of composing preludes as independent piano works dates back to the 15th century with Adam Ileborgh's Ileborgh Tablature.
