Eric Coates, the composer, was dismissed from his post as principal viola of Sir Henry Wood's Queen's Hall Orchestra in 1919, leading him to vow never to play the viola again.

Coates drew energy from city life, with his real joy being the nightlife of inter-war London, which influenced his music.
Performer Biography
John Wilson, the conductor on this album, studied composition and conducting at the Royal College of Music, where he was made a Fellow in 2011.
