Arnold Schoenberg's "Theme and Variations" was commissioned by his publisher, G. Schirmer, because they felt there was a lack of good original compositions for wind bands.

Compositional Technique

Schoenberg's "Theme and Variations," originally for wind band, was later transcribed for orchestra as Opus 43b, making it one of the few works in the orchestral repertoire conceived for wind band.
