Mauro D'Alay, the composer, was born in Parma around 1687 and performed as a violinist in the city cathedral from a young age.
Compositional Technique
D'Alay's concertos, while rooted in Vivaldi's style, are freer and more irregular in phrase development, and less reliant on Vivaldi's typical progressions and rhythmic pulse.

Between 1730 and 1747, D'Alay was active at the court of Philip V of Spain, where he received a high salary and interacted with figures like Domenico Scarlatti and the castrato Farinelli.

As a young adult, D'Alay had contacts with Antonio Vivaldi and the Ospedale della Pietà Orchestra in Venice, where two of his concertos were in the repertoire of the violinist 'Anna Maria della Pietà'.

D'Alay owned the magnificent 1718 'ex San Lorenzo' Stradivarius violin, which he bequeathed to the Constantinian Order upon his death.
