Schubert's 'Hungarian Melody' D 817 features elements typical of gypsy music, such as frequent tempo changes, rubato, sighing harmonic suspensions, augmented intervals, and tritone leaps.

The 'Hungarian Melody' D 817 was inspired by a Hungarian tune Schubert heard a kitchen maid sing in 1824 while he was teaching the Esterházy Countesses at Zseliz Palace.
Critical Reception
The Three Piano Pieces, D 946, were not published until 1868, forty years after Schubert's death, and were edited anonymously by Johannes Brahms.
Composition History
Schubert dedicated the Allegretto in C minor, D 915, to his friend Ferdinand Walcher as a memento when Walcher left for Venice in May 1827.

Schubert's publisher may have suggested the title 'Impromptus' for the D 899 pieces, inspired by Czech composer Jan Václav Voříšek's Impromptus op. 7.
