The text for The Passion of Yeshua is divided into Hebrew, drawn from Jewish scriptures (Tanakh), and English, taken from all four Gospels in two distinct translations.

Compositional Technique

The oratorio The Passion of Yeshua is structured in two parts, each with seven scenes, featuring seven characters, seven choruses, and specific numbers of chorales and 'grand' choruses.

Recording & Production

The Passion of Yeshua was commissioned by the Oregon Bach Festival, the SDG Foundation, and the Buffalo Philharmonic, with additional support from Don and Mary Thompson, Alan and Nancy Manocherian, and Jon Wiswasser.

Composer's Artistic Vision

Richard Danielpour wanted to give Mary, the mother of Jesus, and Mary Magdalene a central and powerful voice in The Passion of Yeshua, as he felt they were often underrepresented in the Gospels.

Performer Biography

JoAnn Falletta, the conductor, is the first female conductor to lead a major American ensemble, appointed music director of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra in 1999.

Composition History

Richard Danielpour had been contemplating writing The Passion of Yeshua for 25 years before he began composing it in earnest in late 2015, completing the full score by July 2017.

Richard Danielpour's oratorio, The Passion of Yeshua, aims to understand Jesus of Nazareth's connection to Jewish history, free from later European Christian interpretations.
