Brett Dean, the composer, was born and studied viola in Australia before moving to Germany, where he was a member of the Berliner Philharmoniker for fourteen years and began composing.
Composition History
Two works on the album, And once I played Ophelia and Gertrude Fragments, were conceived as preparatory studies for specific characters in Brett Dean's Hamlet opera before work on the opera itself began.

The album's title, Rooms of Elsinore, is taken from Brett Dean's viola and piano work included on the recording, encapsulating the album's exploration of the spaces and emotions of Hamlet.
