Composition History
Debussy was not enthusiastic about composing the ballet Khamma, commissioned by dancer Maud Allan, as it diverted him from an opera project based on an Edgar Allan Poe story.
Compositional Technique
In Debussy's later works, the traditional notion of a 'theme' is reinvented, often disintegrating without classical development, and melody gives way to instrumental color and liberated rhythm.
