Did you know?
1/6Compositional Technique
Debussy's music, particularly in works like La Mer, moved away from traditional melodic sequences, focusing instead on the expressive potential of individual chords and instrumental timbres.
Composition History
The Images for orchestra were Debussy's attempt to create a cycle focusing on the 'colors' of three countries (Scotland, Spain, and France) while avoiding musical clichés.
Critical Reception
The premiere of Debussy's La Mer in 1905 was a failure, attributed to the novelty of its musical language and a mediocre performance, but it later found success.
Performer Biography
Lan Shui, the conductor, has been the music director of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra since 1997 and has also served as chief conductor of the Copenhagen Philharmonic Orchestra since 2007.
