The orchestration of Debussy's piano piece L'isle joyeuse was done by Italian conductor Bernardino Molinari with the composer's prior approval in principle, and it was first heard in 1923.

Jun Märkl, the conductor on this album, has been Music Director of the Orchestre National de Lyon since 2005 and also Principal Conductor/Artistic Advisor of the MDR Leipzig Radio Symphony since 2007.

At eighteen, Debussy was employed by Nadezhda von Meck, Tchaikovsky's patroness, as a tutor for her children and a house musician.

Composition History

The Six épigraphes antiques, originally for piano duet, were derived from music Debussy wrote in 1900 to accompany recitations of Pierre Louÿs's poems, Chansons de Bilitis.

Claude Debussy, the composer, began piano lessons at age seven and continued two years later with Verlaine's mother-in-law, who claimed to be a pupil of Chopin.

Notable Performances

Debussy's ballet La boîte à joujoux was postponed due to World War I and was only staged in 1919, after the composer's death, at the Théâtre Lyrique du Vaudeville.

Debussy's ballet La boîte à joujoux (The Toy-Box) was inspired by a children's tale by artist and writer André Hellé and dedicated to Debussy's young daughter, Emma-Claude.
