Composer Biography

Frederick Delius (1862-1934) composed "Sea Drift" and "Songs of Sunset" during a fertile decade following the turn of the century, a period of his complete maturity.

Recording & Production

This recording is part of The Richard Hickox Legacy, a series celebrating his extensive collaboration with Chandos, which resulted in over 280 recordings.

Composition History

Delius's "Songs of Farewell" (1929-30) was composed when he was blind, crippled, and helpless, with the help of his amanuensis Eric Fenby, a young musician who rekindled his creativity.

Performer Biography

Richard Hickox CBE, the conductor on this album, was Music Director of Opera Australia and founded the City of London Sinfonia in 1971.

Composer's Artistic Vision

In all his works, Delius attempted to achieve a 'sense of flow', a vision supremely realized in "Sea Drift".

Critical Reception

Hans Haym, conductor of the Elberfeld Choral Society, believed "Songs of Sunset" was not for a wide public, but for a small group of "musical isolates who are born decadents and life's melancholics".
