Performer Biography

The Thomanerchor Leipzig, famously directed by Johann Sebastian Bach from 1723 to 1750, began touring outside Germany and presented Bach's complete cantatas in radio broadcasts under Karl Straube from 1918 to 1939.

Recording & Production

Many tracks on this album are digitized directly from 'mothers' (positive copies of the master template), while others from 'fathers' (negative copies) had to be converted first.

Recording & Production

All but one of the tracks on this album were recorded after the introduction of electrical recording in 1925, with the sole acoustical track dating from 1912.

Performer Biography

Pietro Mascagni, famous for his opera Cavalleria rusticana, was also an accomplished conductor who took over some of Toscanini's duties at La Scala in 1929.

Recording & Production

Deutsche Grammophon's founder, Emil Berliner, and his engineers developed a method of recording sound waves onto wax discs, which were then transferred to copper pressing tools.

Performer Biography

Titta Ruffo, a legendary Italian baritone known as the 'voice of the lion', is heard in his prime singing Figaro from Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia, a role he debuted at Covent Garden in 1903 and the Met in 1922.
