Gerard Schwarz, the conductor, has been Music Director of the Seattle Symphony since 1985 and was also Music Director of New York's Mostly Mozart Festival from 1984 to 2001.

Performer Biography

Janos Starker, the cellist on this recording, began studying cello at age six in his native Budapest and was performing publicly by age eleven.

Critical Reception

For some thirty years after World War II, David Diamond and other neo-Romantic composers were dismissed as 'irrelevant' by proponents of post-Webernian serialism, such as Pierre Boulez.

This recording was made at the Seattle Center Opera House in Seattle, WA, with tracks 1, 3-6 recorded on September 11th and 12th, 1990, and track 2 on January 6th, 1991.

Performer Biography

Janos Starker, the cellist, served as principal cellist for the Dallas Symphony, the Metropolitan Opera, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra after immigrating to the United States in 1948.

Composer Biography

David Diamond lived in Italy for close to sixteen years during the 1950s, where his music was often rejected for being considered 'old-fashioned' by the advanced twelve-note avant-garde.
