Bottesini was the first to realize that on a bass tuned in fourths, entire melodies could be played by combining harmonics on different strings, a technique he used to great advantage.

Giovanni Bottesini, a double bass virtuoso, was encouraged by Verdi to pursue a solo career, touring the world for half a century and introducing instrumental music of northern Europe to Italy.

The double bass played by Rick Stotijn on this recording is from the Panormo School, dating to the 19th century.
