The idea for this debut CD came from conductor Evan Alexis Christ, who encouraged Duo Gurfinkel to record with the Cottbus Philharmonic Orchestra.
Performer Biography
Daniel and Alexander Gurfinkel, the twin clarinetists on this album, are continuing a family tradition in their third generation; their grandfather and father were also renowned clarinetists.
Instruments
The clarinet was named 'Klarinette' ('small trumpet') because its new key system allowed it to access high ranges previously reserved for the trumpet, also called 'clarino' in the Baroque age.
Recording & Production
This album features arrangements of popular 19th and 20th-century works for two clarinets and orchestra, created to address a lack of original 'great' classical repertoire for this instrumentation.
Performer Biography
Duo Gurfinkel began their musical education at age 8 and were invited by Zubin Mehta to perform as soloists with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra by age 12.
Historical Context
The clarinet only found its permanent place in the orchestra towards the end of the 18th century; previously, the oboe was preferred.
Performer Biography
Evan Alexis Christ, the conductor on this album, studied mathematics and composition at Harvard University before pursuing conducting.
