Composition History
Lalo's Romances on poems by Pierre-Jean de Béranger, a chansonnier famous during the July Monarchy, coincided with the Revolution of 1848-1849.
Compositional Technique
Lalo's Chant breton is his only mélodie to feature a solo instrument, with the oboe chosen for this recording, though the initial manuscript specified a flute.
Recording & Production
This album was recorded by Little Tribeca at the Théâtre Saint-Bonnet (Bourges) in two sessions in January and March 2015.
Composer Biography
Édouard Lalo's second wife, Julie Bernier de Maligny, was an amateur musician whose 'attractive voice' was noted in Parisian salons, and several of Lalo's mélodies were dedicated to her.

Jeff Cohen, the pianist, is a professor of Lied and mélodie at the Conservatoire National in Paris and artistic director of Les Saisons de la Voix in Gordes.
