Jonathan Powell, the pianist on this album, studied piano privately with Denis Matthews and Sulamita Aronovsky, and earned a music degree and doctorate from Cambridge University.
Composer Biography
Konstantin Eiges, the composer, graduated simultaneously from the Medical Faculty of Moscow State University and the Moscow Conservatoire in 1905.
Compositional Technique
In his 'Poème mystique', Eiges created a unique scale using both flattened and sharpened thirds and a sharpened seventh, then developed variants of this mode.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Eiges's creative output, like that of composers Medtner and Rachmaninov, to whom he felt aesthetically closest, primarily focused on piano music.
Composition History
The music on this disc spans Eiges's entire musical life, from late 19th-century beginnings, through late Romanticism and modernism, to a return to Russian classicism in the 1930s.

This album was recorded in the Jacqueline du Pré Music Building in Oxford on August 22 and 23, 2012, with Adaq Khan as the producer-engineer.
