Composer Biography
Paul Elwood, the composer, lived in the Blue Ridge mountains of North Carolina between 1995 and 2008, where he was influenced by the old-time and bluegrass folk tradition.
Compositional Technique
The second movement of "Émissions Transparents," "Voiceless Transit," incorporates disembodied radiophonic voices of mission control, Neil Armstrong, and Buzz Aldrin from the first moon landing.
Composition History
Christian Wolff's "Banjo Player" was commissioned by Paul Elwood in 2012 after a performance together at the Nuit d'Hiver Festival in Marseille, France.
Compositional Technique
The first movement of "Émissions Transparents" uses pitch material based on an anonymous Magnificat chorale from the Episcopal 1940 Hymnal, interspersed with repetitive bells evoking the Angelus.
Composer Biography
Paul Elwood's composition "Plutonic Winds" features a text by poet Albert Goldbarth, who has lived and taught in Wichita, Kansas, where Elwood was born and raised.
