The recording has been digitally remastered from the original SWR tapes by Irmgard Bauer and Andreas Priemer.

Emil Gilels's playing style allowed even an uninformed listener to follow the structure of a sonata, always making clear where they were in the movement.

Emil Gilels, the pianist on this album, was born in Odessa and trained by Heinrich Neuhaus in Moscow.
