Composer Biography
Erik Chisholm, born in Glasgow, left school at 13 to pursue composition, piano, and organ, later studying with Russian pianist Leff Pouishnoff.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Chisholm was nicknamed 'MacBartók' because he approached Scottish traditional music in a similar way that Bartók approached Central European traditions.
Composer Biography
Chisholm was known for introducing new music to Glasgow, giving British premieres of Mozart's Idomeneo and Berlioz's The Trojans, and bringing composers like Hindemith and Bartók to the city.
Performer Biography
Rory Macdonald, the conductor on this recording, was appointed assistant conductor to Iván Fischer at the Budapest Festival Orchestra and to Sir Mark Elder and the Hallé Orchestra.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Chisholm's primary musical influence was his native Scottish music, but he was also greatly influenced by Hindustani music after befriending Kaikhosru Shapurji Sorabji and serving in the Far East during WWII.
