The daily Offices of Morning and Evening Prayer (Matins and Evensong) were in established use before Thomas Cranmer's 1549 Book of Common Prayer, which solidified their position in Reformation England.
Historical Context
Evensong, a liturgy revered as a quintessential expression of Anglicanism, was created by combining parts of the medieval Latin services of Vespers and Compline.
Recording & Production
All fifteen compositions on this album were recorded live at services sung in the Chapel of King's College, Cambridge, during the Lent and Easter Terms of 2014 and 2015.
Compositional Technique
The canticles Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis are at the heart of Evensong, and settings of these texts have been a vibrant genre of Anglican composition since the sixteenth century.
