Hans Ulrich Lehmann's 'without words' was written when he felt his compositions were out of fashion, and he initially hesitated to compose it due to the 'competition' with Schumann.

Hans Ulrich Lehmann, a student of Boulez and Stockhausen, was known for his meticulous and precise musical ideas, exploring sounds between noise and tonal beauty, often in extreme pianissimo.
Instruments
Violist Jürg Dähler plays a viola made by Raffaele Fiorini in Bologna in 1893, and also owns a violin by Antonio Stradivarius from 1714.
Recording & Production
This album is a co-production between GENUIN classics and Radio SRF 2 Kultur, recorded in March, April, and May 2011 at Radiostudio Zurich, Switzerland.
Interpretation
Violist Jürg Dähler states that the viola, with its middle range, is the string instrument closest to the human voice, and he sings with it as if its strings were his vocal cords.
