Falla lived in Paris for nearly seven years, where he received encouragement from prominent French composers like Paul Dukas, Debussy, and Ravel, as well as the Spanish composer Albéniz.

Composition History

Falla's reputation was established with the staging of his opera La vida breve in Nice in 1913 and further solidified by a collaboration with Diaghilev, leading to the 1919 London staging of El sombrero de tres picos by the Ballets russes, with decor by Picasso.

El amor brujo (Love the Magician) was inspired by the gypsy dancer Pastora Imperio and her mother, Rosario la Mejorana, from whom Falla learned about gypsy songs and traditions.
