Composition History

Fauré's First Piano Quintet, Op. 89, took a great deal of effort to compose, with work beginning around 1890 and not completing until early 1906.

This album was recorded in October 2010 at the MC2, Maison de la Culture de Grenoble.

Composer Biography

Marcel Proust, the famous French novelist, was deeply enamored with Fauré's music, writing to the composer in the late 1890s, "I was and still am in love with it."

Critical Reception

The premiere of Fauré's First Piano Quintet in 1906 did not generate overwhelming enthusiasm, and its publication in New York led to it being largely forgotten in France until the 1960s.

Composer's Artistic Vision

Both Gabriel Fauré and Marcel Proust, the author of À la Recherche du temps perdu, aimed to express the inexpressible and reveal the truth of the soul and depth of existence through their art.

Cultural Impact

The Quintettes by Gabriel Fauré, completed in 1906 and 1921, almost coincide with the writing period of Marcel Proust's great novel, À la Recherche du temps perdu (In Search of Lost Time), which was begun in 1908 and finished in 1922.
