Composer Biography

Pancho Vladigerov, a prolific composer with over 70 works, was the first Bulgarian composer to successfully synthesize Bulgarian folk traditions with Western classical forms.

Both Jean Sibelius and Pancho Vladigerov, the composers on this album, studied in Berlin and highly valued the folklore of their respective native countries.

Instruments

Svetlin Roussev plays a 1710 Stradivarius violin named 'Camposelice', on loan from the Nippon Music Foundation.

Emil Tabakov, the conductor, has an extensive discography, including complete sets of Mahler's symphonies (15 CDs) and Brahms's symphonies, overtures, German Requiem, and piano concertos.

This album is the first CD to feature both Sibelius' Violin Concerto and Vladigerov's First Concerto, juxtaposing their contrasting "ice" and "fire" qualities.

Performer Biography

Svetlin Roussev, the violinist on this album, was named Musician of the Year in Bulgaria in 2006 and received the 'Lyre de Cristal' from the Bulgarian Ministry of Culture in 2007.
