1/7Composition History
Wim Henderickx's basset clarinet concerto, SUTRA, was commissioned by BBC Radio 3 and the Borletti-Buitoni Trust, a foundation that supports young musicians and music-related charities.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Wim Henderickx's SUTRA concerto is based on breath, yogic philosophy, and meditation, with its four parts named after yogic concepts: Pranayama, Dhyana, Dharana, and Samadhi.
Instruments
Mozart's Clarinet Concerto, K. 622, was originally scored for the basset clarinet, an instrument with an extended low register, which gradually fell out of use after Mozart's death.
Album & Artwork
The album title, FLOW, reflects the performer Annelien Van Wauwe's belief that both music and yoga can lead to a 'flow state' of energized focus and enjoyment.
Recording & Production
This album was recorded in Hannover, Germany, with the Mozart concerto recorded in April 2021 and the Henderickx concerto recorded in November 2021.
Historical Context
Mozart's final years were challenging, marked by the death of Emperor Joseph II, the Austro-Turkish war, declining patronage in Vienna, and personal struggles.
Interpretation
Annelien Van Wauwe, the performer on this recording, returns to the original basset clarinet scoring for Mozart's Clarinet Concerto, K. 622.
