Cavalli was taken to Venice by the Venetian aristocrat Federigo Cavalli, who had him join the Chapel of St. Mark's, then directed by Claudio Monteverdi.

Cavalli adopted his patron's name, Francesco Cavalli, after his first opera, 'Le nozze di Teti e di Peleo', was staged in 1639.
Historical Context
Gian Carlo de Medici, to whom Cavalli's 1656 collection is dedicated, was a keen art lover and collector who had Florence's Teatro alla Pergola, the first Italian theatre, built in 1657.
