Composer Biography

Amante Franzoni, a Servite monk born in Mantua in 1579, became maestro di cappella of the Basilica of Santa Barbara in October 1612.

Composition History

Franzoni published his work, Apparato Musicale, in 1613, dedicating it to Ferdinando Gonzaga after the death of Duke Francesco, who had originally hired him.

Franzoni's dedication states he composed the music for the feast of Saint Barbara, aiming for music "most fitting both for the taste of my Lords and for the grandeur of such a day."
