Performer Biography

Os Músicos do Tejo, an early music ensemble, was founded with the aim of consolidating the performance of early music on period instruments in Portugal and highlighting Portuguese Baroque repertoire.

Recording & Production

This album is a live recording of a concert that took place on December 14, 2016, at the Grande Auditório of the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian in Lisbon.

Composer Biography

Francisco António de Almeida (c. 1702-1755), one of Portugal's greatest composers, studied in Rome and brought Italian opera to Portugal, composing the first Italian opera by a Portuguese composer, La Patienza di Socrate, in 1733.

Instruments

The Portuguese guitar, a unique instrument specific to Portuguese musical culture, derives from the 'English' guitar, introduced to Portugal by the British Port Wine community in Oporto in the 18th century.

Historical Context

The Cantigas de Santa Maria, a medieval collection of songs from the court of Alfonso X el sabio ('the wise'), are written in Galician-Portuguese, a language that held special prestige for poetry.

Composer's Artistic Vision

The album's program aims to create musical communication between fado, opera, and early music traditions, reflecting the idea that fado has roots in late 18th-century written vocal music called modinhas.
