Composer Biography
Galina Grigorjeva, an Estonian composer born in Ukraine, has lived in Estonia since 1992 and studied composition at the St Petersburg Conservatory and the Estonian Academy of Music.
Compositional Technique
In her work Svjatki, Grigorjeva interweaves Christian heritage with older pagan rituals and beliefs, merging Orthodox sacred music with Russian folklore.
Performer Biography
Paul Hillier, the conductor on this album, founded the Hilliard Ensemble and Theatre of Voices, and has received an OBE, the Order of the White Star of Estonia, and two Grammy Awards.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Grigorjeva's vocal works frequently use ancient Russian and Latin sacred texts, as well as old Russian folklore and Russian poetry.
Recording & Production
This album was recorded in January and March 2015 at Niguliste Church in Tallinn, Estonia, with recording engineers Preben Iwan and Tanel Klesment.
