Baldassare Galuppi served at the court of Catherine the Great in St Petersburg from 1765 to 1768 as court composer and director of music for the Italian court opera.

Critical Reception
The English music historian Dr. Burney visited Galuppi in Venice in 1770 and recorded Galuppi's definition of music, which should consist of 'vaghessa, chiarezza and buona madulazione' (charm, clarity, and good modulation).
