Performer Biography

Fenwick Smith, the flautist on this album, has been a member of the Boston Chamber Music Society since 1984 and the Boston Symphony Orchestra since 1978, and is known for his adventurous discography of world-première recordings.

Composition History

To revive baroque and classical flute repertoire, Gaubert initiated a series of transcriptions in 1910, which were later published as Les Classiques de la flûte and included about thirty of his own contributions.

Composer's Artistic Vision

As a composer, Gaubert was not an innovator but assimilated the innovations of Franck, Ravel, and Debussy, contributing to opera, ballet, orchestral music, songs, and flute music.

Philippe Gaubert almost single-handedly created a repertoire of sonatas, chamber works, and shorter pieces for flute, reflecting the revolution in flute playing initiated by Debussy and flute-maker Theobald Boehm.

Performer Biography

Sally Pinkas, the pianist on this album, has performed internationally as a soloist and with the Hirsch-Pinkas Piano Duo, and is a Professor of Piano at Dartmouth College.

Composer Biography

Philippe Gaubert was a prominent French musician between the two world wars, holding significant appointments as professor of flute at the Paris Conservatoire and principal conductor of both the Paris Opéra and the Société des Concerts.

Composition History

Gaubert completed and published the comprehensive flute treatise, Méthode complète de flûte, in 1923, which was entrusted to him by his mentor Paul Taffanel shortly before Taffanel's death.
