Ge Gan-ru was accepted as a violin student at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music in 1974 after being sent for 're-education' in a labor camp during the Cultural Revolution.

The 12 Études for Extended Piano were composed between 2019 and 2023 in close collaboration between Ge Gan-ru and pianist Yiming Zhang, with each étude undergoing multiple revisions.
