Composer's Artistic Vision

George Lloyd consciously ended his Requiem on a positive note by omitting the 'Libera Me' section from the standard Latin text.

Composition History

George Lloyd's Requiem, his last composition, was written in memory of Diana, Princess of Wales, and completed just before his death in 1998.

Compositional Technique

Due to declining health, George Lloyd scored his Requiem for counter-tenor soloist, small chorus, and organ, rather than a large orchestra, resulting in an intimate, chamber-like atmosphere.

During World War II, George Lloyd served as a radio signaller on Arctic convoys, where his ship was struck by its own torpedo, causing him severe physical and mental trauma.
