Georges Schmitt, a German-French composer, became the cathedral organist in Trier at the age of 14 after his father's death.
Composer Biography
Georges Schmitt moved to Paris in 1844, where he remained until his death in 1900, and became the organist at the Grand Orgue of Saint-Sulpice in 1849.

The CD is based on 21 French piano songs by Georges Schmitt, which were published in 2016 and edited by musicologist and composer Professor Dr. Wolfgang Grandjean.

Trio Cénacle, founded in 2015 by Evelyn Czesla (German soprano), Nico Wouterse (Dutch bass-baritone), and Michèle Kerschenmeyer (Luxembourgian pianist), focuses on song-writing from the greater Luxembourg-Trier-Metz region.
Historical Context
Georges Schmitt was gradually forgotten after the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71, and his later attempts at breakthrough in opera and composition competitions were unsuccessful.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Georges Schmitt's daughter, Marie Duclos, wrote texts for some of his songs under the alias 'Paul Georges'.
