Did you know?
1/7Historical Context
The Second Book of Madrigals is considered a tribute to the advanced Ferrarese culture, which prized and cultivated music, especially the madrigal, as a synthesis of Renaissance art.
Recording & Production
This recording includes the only two surviving instrumental works by Gesualdo: "Canzon francese del Principe" and "Gagliarda del Principe di Venosa."
Composition History
The publication of Gesualdo's madrigals was organized by the musician Scipione Stella, as it would have been unfitting for a nobleman like Gesualdo to concern himself with publishing.
Composition History
The madrigals in Gesualdo's first two books were selected and collated for his journey to Ferrara in 1594 to marry Leonora d'Este, daughter of Alfonso d'Este.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Gesualdo's Second Book of Madrigals continues his previous style, affirming his mature and thriving talent, rather than breaking new ground.
Composer Biography
The text for the madrigal "Sento che nel partire" by Alfonso d'Avalos, included in this book, was also set by Cipriano de Rore and was very popular in the Renaissance.
Composition History
Carlo Gesualdo's Second Book of Madrigals was published in 1594 by Vittorio Baldini in Ferrara, the same year and on the same presses as his First Book of Madrigals.
