Vittorio Giannini's Symphony No. 4, composed in 1959, was dedicated to Jean Morel, who conducted its first performance with the Juilliard Orchestra in May 1960, and there is no record of further performances until this recording.

Vittorio Giannini was a prolific composer and also a dedicated teacher, spending decades on the composition faculties of Juilliard, Curtis, and Manhattan School of Music, and founded the North Carolina School of the Arts.

Vittorio Giannini, the composer, came from a distinguished musical family; his sister Dusolina was a leading operatic soprano, and another sister, Euphemia, taught at the Curtis Institute of Music.

Composition History

Vittorio Giannini's Piano Concerto, composed in 1934, was premiered in New York City in 1937 by the then 22-year-old Rosalyn Tureck, who later became known as the 'High Priestess of Bach'.

Critical Reception

Despite enthusiastic reviews at its 1937 premiere, there is no record of Vittorio Giannini's Piano Concerto being performed again until this recording.
