The Quartetto Santórsola is named after Guido Santórsola, an Italian composer and string player who was born in Apulia, Italy, and died in Montevideo, Uruguay, and wrote important scores for guitar quartets.
Composition History
'Feste Lontane', a Sinfonietta for four guitars by Angelo Gilardino, was written in 2007 at the request of Lucio Matarazzo, first guitar of the Guitart quartet of Avellino.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Angelo Gilardino, the composer, believes that a guitar quartet should not simply add four full guitar sounds together, but rather divide the sound of one or two guitars into varied, sensitive, disassembled timbres.
Recording & Production
All members of the Quartetto Santórsola play guitars specially built for them by Milan-based luthier Roberto De Miranda, including an eight-string and a high guitar.

Compositional Technique
The 'Sonetti Giuliani' by Angelo Gilardino are based on seven studies for guitar by Mauro Giuliani, an eminent 19th-century guitarist and composer, with the rhythmic and harmonic textures supporting an independent melody played by a terz guitar.
