Composer Biography

Emilia Giuliani (1813-1850) was the illegitimate daughter of Mauro Giuliani, an extraordinary guitarist who made the guitar a solo instrument with orchestra in Vienna.

Historical Context

Emilia Giuliani's father, Mauro, had two families: one in Trieste and a 'pseudo-wife' in Vienna, Maria Anna Wiesenberger, known as Nina, with whom he had Emilia.

This recording is the first known complete recording of Emilia Giuliani's works, performed on a period instrument: a guitar made around 1830 by René Lacote.
