Composition History

Glazunov's Violin Concerto in A minor, Op 82, was premiered on February 15, 1905, in St Petersburg by the great violinist Leopold Auer, to whom it is dedicated, with the composer conducting.

Compositional Technique

Glazunov's Violin Concerto is essentially a single continuous movement, possibly modeled on the piano concertos of Liszt, which Glazunov greatly admired.

Alexander Vedernikov, the conductor on this recording, was the Music Director of the Bolshoi from 2001 to 2009 and is known for rebuilding its reputation for artistic excellence.

Alexander Glazunov, a star pupil of Rimsky-Korsakov, became one of Russia's greatest composition teachers and director of the St Petersburg Conservatoire from 1905 through the 1917 Revolution.

Othmar Schoeck's Concerto quasi una fantasia in B flat major, Op 21, is a memorial to his infatuation with Hungarian violinist Stefi Geyer, for whom Béla Bartók also wrote his first violin concerto.

Compositional Technique

Schoeck's Concerto quasi una fantasia contains no cadenza, as the composer aimed for a seamless, rhapsodic flow where the violinist is continuously engaged.
