Srul Irving Glick (1934-2002) was a prolific Canadian composer who grew up immersed in music, singing in his cantor father's choir and listening to great composers.
Composer Biography
Srul Irving Glick worked as a classical music producer at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) from 1962 to 1986, winning seven Grand Prix du Disque and a JUNO Award.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Glick's initial inspiration for the Suites Hébraïques was to compose a nostalgic work for his parents, invoking the rich musical culture he experienced at home.
Composition History
The six Suites Hébraïques were written over a twenty-three year span, beginning in 1961, with the final Suite No. 6 intended to complete the cycle for a single concert performance.
Performer Biography
Cellist Cameron Crozman plays on the ca. 1696 'Bonjour' Stradivarius cello and the ca. 1830 'Shaw' Adam cello bow, generously loaned from the Canada Council for the Arts Instrument Bank.
Cultural Impact
Srul Irving Glick received the Yuval Award in 2000 for his lifelong commitment to composing music that captures the heart and touches the soul, and was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada in 1994.
