Granados transcribed 26 sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti, originally for harpsichord, for the piano, based on a recently discovered manuscript of Scarlatti's works.

Unlike Scarlatti's originals, which are almost devoid of expressive indications, Granados added numerous expressive markings to his transcriptions.

Enrique Granados, the composer, tragically died with his wife when their ship was torpedoed by a German submarine while crossing the English Channel in 1916.
