The Cologne String Sextet supports the International Pernambuco Conservation Initiative (I.P.C.I.) to preserve and expand the forests of Pernambuco trees, whose wood is used for string instrument bows.
Album & Artwork
The album's title, "Great Britain - Great Music," and the recording project itself, are presented by the Cologne String Sextet as a contribution to finding intelligent and generous solutions during the "struggle for Britain" (Brexit).
Performer Biography
Demetrius Polyzoides, a violinist in the Cologne String Sextet, has unearthed and published readable, well-edited separate parts for several works, including some on this album.
Recording & Production
The recording was produced by WDR Broadcasting, who suggested the project of recording works by British composers in 2017, a year of Brexit negotiations.
Historical Context
British string sextets occupy a small repertoire niche because the string sextet genre itself is rare, and chamber music did not play a key role for most well-known British composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Interpretation
The Cologne String Sextet had to create separate musical parts themselves from scores in the British Library for some of the works on this album, as they were difficult to make out.
