L'Amant jaloux, or The Jealous Lover, was first performed at Versailles on November 20, 1778, in the presence of King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette.

Composer Biography
André Grétry, the composer, was appointed personal director of music to Marie Antoinette in 1774 and later received a generous pension and the Legion of Honour from Napoleon.

Grétry's L'Amant jaloux is one of the first operas to use 'functional recollection' of motifs, creating associations between characters and scenes for a sense of organic unity.
