Compositional Technique

Groven developed a method to combine folk music sonorities with symphonic polyphony by selectively removing notes from tempered chords to mimic justly intoned music.

This recording was made in October 2001 at the Stavanger Concert Hall, Norway, using Neumann microphones and a Studer D19 MIC AD pre-amplifier.

Eivind Groven, the composer, was largely self-taught and an invaluable collector of over 1,000 folk tunes.

Performer Biography

Eivind Aadland, the conductor, was encouraged to pursue his conducting career by Mariss Jansons and was previously concertmaster of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra.

Instruments

Eivind Groven built an organ with three times as many notes per octave to better recreate folk music's tonal quality, decades before similar material from other sources.
