Composer Biography
In 1975, Sofia Gubaidulina co-founded the ensemble 'Astreya' with Victor Suslin and Vyacheslav Artyomov, which specialized in improvisation on rare folk instruments.
Recording & Production
The composer, Sofia Gubaidulina, attended a 1991 performance of her Bassoon Concerto by Harri Ahmas and the Lahti Chamber Ensemble and suggested their interpretation be included on this CD.

Gubaidulina's work often goes beyond purely musical aspects, incorporating poetic texts, rituals, or instrumental 'actions', and sometimes demonstrating a preoccupation with mystical thinking and Christian symbolism.
Performer Biography
Harri Ahmas, the bassoonist on this recording, also studied composition at the Sibelius Academy and his performance of Gubaidulina's Bassoon Concerto at the Helsinki Festival led the composer to suggest this recording.
Compositional Technique
Gubaidulina's 'Concordanza' explores the polarities of 'concord' (legato playing, peaceful motion) and 'discord' (staccato, tremolo, disjointed writing, spoken sibilants) as a dramatic principle.
Composer Biography
Sofia Gubaidulina, born in 1931 in the Tatar Republic, studied piano and composition at the Kazan Conservatory and continued her compositional training at the Moscow Conservatory.
