The Malmö Symphony Orchestra and Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra perform on this album, with recordings made in 1984 and 1992 respectively.

Composition History

Joseph Dente's Symphony in D minor won a meritorious third prize in an international composition competition in Berlin in 1888, which attracted 57 symphonies from across Europe.

Historical Context

At the time these works were composed, Sweden had only one professional orchestra, The Royal Court Orchestra, limiting opportunities for composers of orchestral music.

Composer's Artistic Vision

Hallberg, a composer on this album, was influenced by Franz Berwald, who encouraged composers to work in larger formats rather than simple song forms.

Composition History

Hallberg's Concert Overture No. 2 features an 'unconcerned borrowing' of Carl Michael Bellman's melody to Fredman's Epistle No. 82, "Vila vid denna källa."
